Each tale type includes a synopsis, or basic plotline, but although the index is putatively an analytic tool for folktales (that is, oral tales), these synopses in many cases are outlines of the versions of the tales €rchen, or in Charles Perrault’s Histoires ou found in the semiliterary Kinder- und Hausma  contes du temps passe (Stories or Tales of Times Past, 1697).
