Chapter Ten looks at the rise of Jay Lovestone as a factional leader after the death of Ruthenberg in early 1927. At the same time that Lovestone was rising in power, the Stalinisation of the Comintern was proceeding more rapidly; despite his later falling out with Stalin, Lovestone was crucial in the process of Stalinisation of the American CP. Chapter Eleven examines Lovestone at the apex of his power, as he allied himself with Bukharin in the Comintern. This chapter pays special attention to Lovestone’s assertion that American capitalism was still growing; although this would later be used as evidence for Lovestone’s disloyalty to the Comintern, in 1927–8 this was in keeping with the general position of the Comintern.
Chapter One analyses the growth of the left wing within the Socialist Party, and the birth of the Communist movement, divided into competing groups. The Comintern proved crucial in providing the political framework and organisational guidance to unify the party. Chapter Two turns to the question of legality. The party was born amid the Red Scare; this drove the party underground. However, the United States as a norm allows a larger degree of freedom of press and organisation than many countries.
