The colours were already 21 years old at Sobraon, having been presented on 7 March 1827 by Lady Amherst, the wife of the govemorgeneral, while the regiment was stationed at Meerut. They had already been carried in action during the First Afghan War, and earlier in the Sikh War, where the regiment lost a total of nine officers and 203 men kHled.
